Robots are able to work tirelessly, for hours on end, without ever compromising the quality of their work. They need a reliable power source in order to run the most efficiently or they will lose much of their potential. Robots are used to power everything from vehicles to medical equipment and some robots need a regular flow of power to perform their task effectively.
Most robots are powered by some sort of battery. Batteries and their effectiveness depends on the length of battery life, weight and safety of use. Although rechargeable batteries are convenient, they do not last as long and are not as powerful as lead acid and silver cadmium batteries. There are different types of generators, fuel cells and other oxidants that allow for a continuous supply of power and energy. Powering robots requires different levels of power for different types of robots.
Medical equipment must be backed up by multiple power sources as many of these devices are used to treat life or death illnesses. Some robots work in assembly lines or collect data while others move into dangerous spaces saving human beings from performing the jobs themselves. Some robots that perform less important tasks can be powered with solar energy yet most industrial robots are using more reliable sources of power.
New power sources have been developed to not only give consistent levels of power but provide multiple levels of power back ups. Some robots use dual power sources where there is a combination of power sources to maximize efficiency.
Some of the issues faced by scientists and engineers are the physical aspects of containing the required amount of power in the given space. Many outer space explorations have developed their own forms of power in order to adapt to the unusual environments. While robots have been prevalently used in current society, the power sources for those robots are constantly changing and adapting to perform an infinite number of tasks.
